As subtly as we could, we changed our approach so that would be closest to the Jackalman and the others were more neutrally placed so as to make it less obvious that they were heading for the other guard.

As I approached the guard post, I could see the Jackalman was watching my arrival closely.  It was hard to tell in the rain, but it looked as though his eyes were narrowed and his lips drawn up into a half-snarl. My instincts had been spot on and now I was going to have to deal with him.  My hand started towards my belt, itching for the reassuring feel of my dagger’s handle under my cloak.  Then I remembered that I’d put all my weapons in the cart.  The Jackalman, on the other hand, was armed with standard issue guard equipment as well as his own natural weaponry – teeth and claws.
