For a terrible moment I thought I was doomed. The ghosts flew into motion, flying around me in a dizzying pattern. Ghostly bodies flew in and out of focus making my head swim as I tried to keep track of the mall.

To keep some kind of focus, I concentrated on the stars overhead, drawing some stability from their familiar presence. Hang on! If I could see the stars, the darkness surrounding me must be lifting.

Now that I had clamed myself, I took another look at the swirling maelstrom of flying ghosts and found that they were, in fact, receding and making their way along the wall. They were back to patrolling Gertrude’s route.

Within seconds, only one of the phantoms remained, my interrogator. He floated before me for a moment, his empty, undead eyes locked on mine. Then to my complete amazement, he saluted, turned in mid air and floated off after his comrades.

I didn’t know if he could still hear me, but I felt moved to speak anyway: “Thank you”.
